Botting is never 100% safe but there is no confirmed ban report from a hearthranger user.
My record goes back to November 2015, since then 4-6 hours botting a day to get 100 gold/day and getting rank 5 for past 10 months - excluding last two where I did this manually due to new AI being still in development. I am sure it will catch up eventually.
